MTD deadlines.
Your 2026/27 diary.
Once you are in MTD, a regular routine makes the deadlines easier to manage.
Standard updates for 2026/27
Each update covers the tax year so far. These are the default tax-year periods, rather than calendar-quarter periods.
| Update | Cumulative records covered | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| First | 6 April to 5 July 2026 | 7 August 2026 |
| Second | 6 April to 5 October 2026 | 7 November 2026 |
| Third | 6 April 2026 to 5 January 2027 | 7 February 2027 |
| Fourth | 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027 | 7 May 2027 |
And the annual tax return?
The 2026/27 annual tax return is due by 31 January 2028. Quarterly updates do not replace it.
Give yourself some breathing space
Your records need to reach us ahead of HMRC's deadline. We agree your cut-off dates during onboarding, so there is time to ask questions and deal with missing information.
If you have already missed an update, get in touch promptly. We check what is outstanding and agree any catch-up work before taking it on.
For 2026/27, HMRC is not issuing late-submission penalty points for quarterly updates. You must still keep digital records and send the updates before submitting your annual tax return. Read HMRC’s penalty guidance. Checked 4 November 2026. Source: HMRC: send quarterly updates. Alternative calendar periods are available; confirm the setup used in your software.
